Aged care in Canberra: what is available in each region

By the Glidance research teamUpdated 2026-09-10

Every figure in this guide is drawn from government registers, the Department of Health and Aged Care's published data, or providers' own published schedules; nothing is estimated. General information, not financial advice; confirm your own situation with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.

The ACT currently has 29 residential aged care homes and 160 registered home care providers serving the territory. The two work very differently by geography: homes are fixed places, so the district matters; home care providers serve the whole territory regardless of where their office sits. Here is the map as it stands.

Residential homes by district

Gungahlin, despite being one of Canberra's fastest growing districts, currently has no residential aged care home on our records; families there generally look to Belconnen or the Inner North. Each district page above lists every home with its published room prices, Star Ratings and services.

Home care: one market, territory-wide

All 160 home care providers serve the whole ACT, including Canberra-based organisations and interstate providers whose registration covers the territory. Because they all come to you, the sensible comparison is on published pricing, services and ratings rather than address. Our home care in Canberra page summarises the market, including the current range of published hourly rates, and respite care in Canberra covers carer breaks from in-home respite to overnight cottage stays.

Choosing across districts

For residential care, distance matters most for the people who will visit. A home 10 minutes from family tends to mean more visits than a marginally higher rated home across town, which is worth weighing alongside the numbers. Room prices in Canberra vary substantially between neighbouring homes, and every price on Glidance links to the home's own published source, so you can verify before you visit. Start with your district's page, shortlist three or four homes, and use the compare view to see them side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Which Canberra district has the most aged care homes?
Belconnen currently has the most residential homes on our records, followed by the Woden Valley and Weston Creek. Gungahlin, despite its size, currently has none, so Gungahlin families usually look to Belconnen or the Inner North.
Does it matter which district my home care provider is based in?
Generally no. Home care providers are registered to serve the whole ACT, and many providers based interstate are registered to serve Canberra too. What matters is their published pricing, services and availability, not their office address.
Can I get respite care in the ACT?
Yes. The ACT has dedicated respite services including an overnight respite cottage, and many home care providers deliver in-home respite under Support at Home or CHSP. Residential homes also offer short respite stays.
